Jailed HDP candidate Demirtas to hold election ‘e-rally’ via social media

2018/06/21 | 14:45

(Iraq Now News)- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Selahattin Demirtas, the jailed presidential candidate of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), has called on his supporters to take part in an election rally – entirely on Twitter.“Tonight [Thursday], between 19:30 - 21:30, I will hold an e-rally here [on Twitter].

My lawyers will immediately convey my messages from prison to you.

I am waiting for all of you to come to the rally,” Demirtas tweeted.Sarcastically, he called on people to “bring their flags and posters.” The HDP added a picture of a kettle to the rally advertisement.

Demirtas’ supporters frequently share images of kettles to tease Turkish officials who initially thought the jailed candidate was tweeting on a phone smuggled into prison.

The only electronic device they found when they searched his cell however was a kettle. It has become a running joke among HDP supporters that Demirtas tweets through his kettle, his lawyer Aydin Erdogan told Rudaw English.Demirtas was jailed in November 2016 along with his co-chair Figen Yuksekdag and a number of HDP MPs facing terrorism charges. He held a similar social media Q&A in early June, inviting Turkish and foreign social media users to ask him questions through the #AskDemirtas hashtag in Kurdish, Turkish, and English.Demirtas is able to meet his lawyers a few times per week and call his wife twice per month.

They shared a phone call on June 6 in which he claimed Turkish officials are trying to “defame” him while he cannot defend himself. He faces up to 142 years in jail if found guilty, but could be released if he wins the June 24 election, or if a sympathetic opposition party comes to power and drops the charges.
