(Iraq Now News)-

People outraged by poor economic growth and bad social services protested in the city of Basra on Friday.

Protesters were chanting, holding banners and waving Iraqi flags.

They also blocked access to Umm Qasr port, near Basra.

“I’m not asking them to get me something from space or something impossible.

I’m just asking them to treat me like a human, to live like a human,” exclaimed Mohammed, one of the protesters.

Demonstrations against the prevailing economic situation have been swept the southern part of the country in the last five days.

I’m just asking them to treat me like a human, to live like a human.”

W/S Protesters *CUTAWAY*

SOT, Mohammed, protester (Arabic): “If they try to look in the Iraqi youth’s faces they will see the misery and sadness and the miserable life we have in here.

We are not asking for the impossible, we want them just to deal with Basra as a city with inhabitants [who are] human beings.”

W/S Protesters

SOT, Kadim, protester (Arabic): “We blame the officials of Basra because no one came to meet and stand with these deprived people who are gathering here from dawn to night and nobody cares.

The people have been standing in sunlight from 7am until the evening and officials do not care.”
