Halbusi calls for legislation to protect women

2018/10/13 | 21:10

(Iraq Now News)- Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbusi called on Saturday for legislation to prevent violence against women in Iraq.Speaking at the 10th International Conference of the Islamic Day Against Violence Against Women, Halbusi said that crimes against women necessitate the development of laws to prevent those abusing the lives of Iraqis, explaining that the increase in violence against women is due to the emergence of political chaos and confusion among the masses."We seek legislation that limits violence against women," he said, adding that violence against women does not resemble the typical epidemic occurring in other countries.Iraq once boasted a liberal society and progressive laws for women and the family, going back to the 1950s.

Those gains were eroded after the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein and led to the emergence of powerful religious parties and a rise in extremism.
