Kurdish gov't wants bodies of those who drowned in Aegean Sea returned

2018/10/13 | 21:45

(Iraq Now News)- The Kurdistan Regional Government issued a statement on the incident of the drowning of Iraqi Kurds in the Aegean Sea in Turkey, expressing its eagerness to have the bodies returned."Families of the Kurdistan region suffered a shipwreck days ago in the Aegean Sea.

Since the first hours of the incident, the government of the province began to closely follow the incident," the spokesman for the regional government announced."The government in Kurdistan is in constant contact with the responsible authorities in Turkey and is doing everything in its power to help return the bodies of the victims to their families," he said. The Turkish Coast Guard found the bodies of 15 people, mostly from Iraq’s Kurdistan region, on the coast of the city of Izmir after a failed attempt to reach Europe across the Aegean Sea.The frequency of tragedies on the Aegean Sea has sharply diminished since the implementation of a Turkey-European Union refugee deal in March 2016, but that agreement is now hanging by a thread.
