Mosul (IraqiNews.com) The paramilitary troops of Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi have declared being shelled by an unidentified aircraft in west of Mosul.
A statement by Saraya al-Jihad militia said “troops deployed in west of Mosul have been shelled.”
“At 3 AM on Monday, a rocket fired from a fighter jet targeted our troops on the main road linking between Tal Abta and Addaya regions, which lead to Mosul.
The road is a main used for Islamic State supplies in Mosul.
The rocket made a huge whole with a diameter of 12 meters and depth of 10 meters,” the statement added.
PMUs, an alliance of more than 60 mostly Shia militias, are recognized by the government as a national force under the Prime Minister’s command.
Iraqi forces, which invaded the Old City district on Sunday, are primarily eyeing the Nuri al-Kabeer Mosque, at which Islamic State’s supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave his famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the group’s rule in Iraq and neighboring Syria.
More than 1200 Islamic State militants, including snipers and leaders, were have been killed since launch of offensives in western Mosul, Federal Police previously announced.
In January, the eastern side of Mosul was retaken after three months of battles.
Another offensive was launched in February to retake the western side of the city.
