(Iraq News)- KHURMATU, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish Peshmerga forces defeated a widespread ISIS assault on their bases in the town of khurmatu, south of Kirkuk on Tuesday.

In the confrontation, which lasted three hours, a number of ISIS militants and a Peshmerga soldier were killed.  The ISIS attack was repelled in three directions.

Bodies of two ISIS militants were left behind and are in the hands of the Peshmerga.

Bodies of two more ISIS militants were left between the Peshmerga fronts and areas held by ISIS militants, Rudaw’s correspondent in Khurmatu said.  According to a Peshmerga commander, as many as 60 ISIS militants waged the attack but failed to make any advances.  The Peshmerga fighters successfully pushed back their attack, according to the Peshmerga commander. The Rudaw reporter, citing Peshmerga officials, added, ISIS had many fatalities in the attack, but they took their bodies with them. Rudaw’s correspondent in the area said that one Peshmerga fighter was killed and three more suffered minor injuries in the attack. ISIS militants have recently accelerated their movements in the region.

Today’s attack marked the second in a week and a fifth in less than two months. The bulk of the attacks have reportedly generated from the group’s held town of Hawija in west of Kirkuk.  All their attacks have been pushed back, which have led to some fatalities and injuries on the part of the Peshmerga. Kurdish security officials have said the liberation of Hawija is crucial for the security of Kirkuk city and the region in general which suffered from several deadly bombings over the past year claimed by ISIS militants.
