Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Fifteen people were killed on Sunday when a booby-trap exploded in a school building west of Mosul, according to a military source.
Dargham al-Mawla, an army captain, told Anadolu Agency that 15 people, including 12 members of the Tribal Mobilization,a Sunni, pro-government paramilitary force, were killed, while 23 others were wounded when a booby-trap exploded inside a school building in Magarn, a village falling between the town of Badush and Tal Afar.
Al-Mawla said the school’s building had been handed over to Tribal Mobilization commanders for training purposes.
He added that some of the school rooms were booby-trapped.
Iraqi government forces claimed the recapture of Mosul early July, ending a nine-month campaign to bring down the birthplace of Islamic State militants’ self-styled “caliphate” which was declared in 2014.
Since the declaration, security forces have embarked in a campaign to clear the city from remnant IS cells and a number of occasional attacks against troops and civilians has been reported.
Iraqi commanders had said the extremist group lost up to 30.000 of its fighters during the Mosul campaign.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Saturday up to 1260 civilians were killed in the battle.
